Students in Mr. Ruiz's middle school science class started the year off with several inquiry based experiments. Students worked together to complete a given task through experimenting. Students started the week off with a notecard tower challenge. Using only notecards, students worked to build the tallest tower they could that would hold a ping pong ball on top. On the second day, students worked together to design the best paper airplane. After finding a good design, students used poster board to recreate their best design on a much larger scale. One of the big airplanes flew over 76 feet. The next challenge had students working to figure out how to use 2 sheets of paper and 1 foot of tape to make the longest chain. Students were only given about 15 minutes and one group made a chain that was almost 26 feet long! The fourth day brought with it a new teambuilding challenge. Students worked together to try to open escape boxes. Students were given clues to help them figure out the combinations to a variety of locks. If they could unlock all 5 locks, they escaped! The final experiment had students working with film canisters, alka-seltzer, and water. When students combined all three, they were able to make a film canister rocket! Their goal was to see how many pennies they could attach to their rocket and still launch above a meter.
Garry Michael: Nominated by Mr. Ruiz. Overall, Garry has started the year off strong in my class. He always is in the best spirits with a smile on his face. There has yet to be a day where Garry hasn't stopped to talk to me and tell me about his day and I like being able to hear about how things are going. I truly enjoy having him in science class and cannot wait to see all the great things he does throughout the year!
