Early Literacy

CREATING A LITERACY ENVIRONMENT IN YOUR HOME

  • Books Galore!  Fill a child's world with books of all shapes, sizes, and kinds.  Include stories, books filled with facts, poetry books, song books, nursery rhyme books, and books about people and places.  Don't forget other texts like magazines, restaurant menus, recipes, etc.

  • Read It Again! Read children's favorite books again and again.

  • Comfort Zone!  Create comfortable places to read to and with children.  Set up a cozy corner with pillows and a basket of favorite books.  A parents' lap is also a favorite!

  • Shhhh!  Set aside a daily quiet time for children to read independently.

  • Check It Out! Visit the school and/or public library regularly.

  • Write On!  Provide writing materials such as crayons, pencils, paint, and paper to encourage children to draw and/or write down their thoughts and ideas.

  • Display it!  Show children you value their work by hanging it up for all to see.

  • Do It Yourself!  Let children see you reading and writing on a regular basis.

Read aloud to your child every day

Why read aloud?
Reading aloud builds a foundation for future success in school and in life.  Read alouds help children learn new words, experience new places, enjoy models of fluency, and appreciate the value of books and reading.  Reading aloud shows young children how print works.  They see that books are read from front to back and left to right.  They notice that the letters and words on the page carry meaning.
